Prince of Songkla University or “Mor Or” has received its name from the abbreviation of the King’s father. It is the main state university in southern Thailand and have been established for 45 years.
There are 5 campuses (Hat Yai, Pattani, Phuket, Surat Thani and Trang)
There are approximately 38,000 students, 2,216 academics of whom 1,255 with doctorate degree or 56.63% (Target is 60%). Prince of Songkla University is considered 1 of 9 national research-based universities and is in the top 5 universities of the country.
Therefore, the mission of the university focuses on academic leadership in the disciplines that are relevant to the potential of the south and linking the area to the regional network. It aims to develop a knowledge-based society which is rooted from multiculturalism and sufficiency economy.
This is combination with applying knowledge to teaching and bringing research into practice in the society and community.
For Phuket Campus, its main mission is to develop into an international campus. Therefore, many programs offered here are international programs. The programs focuses on hospitality and tourism (Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism), international language programs (Faculty of International Studies), programs in information technology, computer, and environmental technology (Faculty of Technology and Environment), and computer engineering program (Faculty of Engineering).
Each of these faculties has academics who are either studying and have completed PhD which will increase the number of academic with doctoral degree to more than 60% of its total academic staff in a few years. At the same time, all academics are expected to conduct research in their fields of expertise and help solve the problems in the local areas, the country and create new knowledge while contributing to teaching and learning of the students. This ensures that Phuket Campus will soon develop into an international campus in keeping with the world-class tourist destination of Phuket or the Pearl of the Andaman.
